Phase One P65+ Demo/Rental SALE

In order to make room for newer digital back systems in our rental dept., we have decided to put our current models up for sale. Up for grabs here is a Phase One P65+ digital back. This is a 60 megapixel full-frame 645 digital back with extremely high image quality. It is mated to an autofocus Hasselblad H2 body and comes with an HC 80mm f/2.8 lens. All Hasselblad HC lenses have leaf shutters so you can sync your flashes at up to 1/800 of a second.

The package includes batteries, charger, Firewire tether cable and most standard accessories. In addition, a Hasselblad 120 film magazine for the H2 body is also included. The kit is cosmetically in good condition with only a few minor scuffs and scratches on the body.

The Hasselblad H-body, viewfinder, film magazine and 80mm lens have a 30 day warranty, just like any other used item we sell, but the P65+ digital back will come with an extra few months, a total warranty of 90 days.

Phase One IQ140 Demo/Rental SALE

Up for sales is our ex-rental Phase One IQ140 with a 645 DF body and 80mm leaf-shutter lens offering flash-sync speeds up to a very fast 1/1600 second. The body has been upgraded with a 10K Li-Ion battery pack and charger, giving you many thousands of frames between charges for the DF body. The IQ140 is a 40 megapixel digital back (1.3x crop-factor from 645) with an ISO range of 50-800, and in reduced resolution Sensor+ mode, up to ISO 3200. The IQ140 is one of the latest generation of Phase One backs with a "Retina" resolution touch screen and a truly well designed and intuitive touch interface.

The IQ140 digital back with 645DF is a Value-Added bundle with all standard accessories. Beau Photo will provide a 90 day warranty on the digital back. Finally, the Metz flashes have arrived! A great Christmas gift too and in stock at $174.95

After nearly a year-long wait, we have finally received a shipment of the new, pocket-sized Metz 26 AF-1 flash units for Fujifilm X-series cameras! I've briefly tested one out on my X-E2 (the X-E1 in the above photo was just being a "model") and its exposures seem accurate. For its size, it seems quite powerful too, with a guide-number of 26 (meters).

It comes with a black fabric, drawstring pouch for storage and includes a clip-on telephoto extender. There is a flip up wide-angle panel and the flash pivots down for close or macro shots, sits in its standard height (as seen in the photo) for normal shots and then pivots up vertically for an angled ceiling bounce. It has a TTL mode, a Slave mode (not tested yet) and a small LED video light with two brightness settings, sufficient to add a bit of a fill or to create a catch-light in the eyes if shooting a video. It even comes with a USB port, presumably to allow for future firmware upgrades when new cameras are released.

It uses two AAA batteries and with alkaline cells, its recycle time is quite snappy. I will be testing it with some NiMH Eneloops as well to see how much faster its recycling may be. Here are two more views, first a side view showing how slim it is…

Phase One - Capture One Pro 7 sale!

If you haven’t tried a current version of Capture One, you owe it to yourself to give it a whirl. A trial version can be downloaded here: Capture One Pro 7 Trial. Until the end of March, we have a sale on in-stock copies for a mere $225… regular price is $299.

Capture One has evolved substantially over the last few years and not only does the present version offer the same excellent workflow, colour fidelity and amazing skin-tones that Capture One has always been known for, but there are now image database tools with image management similar to Adobe Lightroom, an incredibly well implemented set of perspective correction tools for architectural work, a superb lens correction module and much more.

In addition, if you are a Fujifilm X-system shooter, using the unique, moiré resistant but “hard-to-demosaic” X-Trans sensor, then Capture One deserves a good, long look too. While Adobe raw conversions from X-Trans sensors have come a long way in the last year, you will still be able to extract far more fine detail with many other raw converters like Capture One Pro, especially in shadow areas.

While there are other programs that offer excellent X-Trans raw conversions, like Iridient Developer and PhotoNinja, neither of these offers a full package that can completely replace Adobe Lightroom like Capture One is able to. In addition, those other programs do not offer anywhere near the same breadth of versatility that Capture One offers, like the aforementioned perspective and lens correction tools, the ability to act as an image database programs etc. In addition, the colour reproduction you get from Capture One is top notch, whether you shoot with a digital back, a digital SLR or a Fujifilm camera.

Demo Sale! Epson Stylus Photo R3000...

It's time to rotate out our demo Epson Style Photo R3000 printer. Our regular price is $849, but the demo printer can be had on sale for only $700 SOLD! (one demo only at that price)

The R3000 is a pigment-based inkjet with 8 inks (9 if you count both matte and glossy black) that will give archival prints on the appropriate paper. Estimated print longevity ranges from around 60 years with RC-based gloss or semi-gloss papers, to well over 100 years for acid-free, archival, cotton based fine-art stock. With an exceptionally small, 2 pico-litre droplet size, prints are extremely sharp and detailed with no visible dithering. The addition of two lighter gray inks (Epson calls them "Light Black" and "Light Light Black") means that black & white images also look stunning with no visible dot pattern. Ink cartridges are larger than average for a desktop printer too, being about 2.5 times the capacity of the R2880 for example, so this reduces cartridge swaps and saves on ink cost as well.

Having pigment inks means that the R3000 is compatible a huge variety of third-party papers and the vast majority of manufacturers have ICC profiles ready-made for use with the Epson R3000. We sell a large variety of papers from Hahnemühle, Ilford, Moab, Crane (Museo), Harman, Pictorico and of course Epson, so the versatility of a pigment-based printer like the R3000 is tremendous.

Video Tripods.
Why would you use a dedicated video tripod over your old 3-way or ball head?
Two reasons; smoother pans and consistency in repeatable movements.  Many new videographers or those trying out the video capabilities of a new DSLR for the first time, try to save money by "making do" by using a still tripod and head to achieve their desired video movements. While this certainly will do in a pinch, it is often not till you get to see the footage on a larger screen that you see the shortfalls of  using inadequate equipment, such as;  jerky movements, looking like the you tried to pan right after getting out of the water after the polar bear swim, "backlash," where, as you finish the pan, the legs snap back in the opposite direction of pan, inconsistency, you nail the pan or the tilt sometimes but when it really counts and the "pressure is on," the results are disappointing.

The video quality of DSLR cameras nowadays can be spectacular, even mainstream television and movies are being made with these cameras. Where these cameras fall short, is in their built-in microphones. While these mics are better than nothing, the quality of recording improves greatly with the addition of a external recording device mounted on the hot-shoe of the camera.  Companies like Røde and Sennheiser make a wide range of high quality mini shotgun and stereo mics, in a wide range of prices, that will take your video sound to a whole new level.  Zoom makes external recording devices that record to an SD card that you sync up to the video footage later. There are automated synchronization software products like "PluralEyes 3" that can make this a breeze to achieve.
