Beau Photo has a new website, and blog!
Greetings! It has been a long time coming, but Beau Photo Supplies now has a brand-new website! This is not a mere refresh of our old site, rather it's a ground-up new design, something we've been working on in-house for the last couple of years. The new site will feature lots of imagery, something we all agreed was important from the day we first started discussing a new design.
This will be the last posting to this Google hosted blog, which has served us quite well for a number of years now. We will be keeping this older blog around for the foreseeable future, so people can still access older postings if they're hunting for a previous article or review. Some of the more popular postings will likely get transferred to our new blog, or some even to the articles or reviews areas of our new site.
We will be trying very hard to ensure the new blog gets more postings, and on a more regular basis. In addition, our new website will also be kept more up-to-date with used equipment and will see many more product reviews and sample image galleries. Finally, our new site actually has detailed listings of the majority of the thousands of products we stock in our store! Currently, what are missing are some of the smaller camera accessories, like caps, hoods, cables and such, as well as a few key categories (continuous lighting and printer inks are the obvious ones) that just didn't quite get done in time. Those should be added within the next month or two as well.
So, without further ado, click on the banner at the top of this post to be taken to a blog posting on our new site, welcoming you to our new site! Or click this link below...
http://www.beauphoto.com/welcome-to-the-all-new-beau-photo-website/
For the main blog on the new site, this is the link...
http://www.beauphoto.com/blog/
DNS propagation should have completed pretty much worldwide by now, but if the above links don't seem to work, or if you're still seeing our old site when you visit www.beauphoto.com, which looks like the left part of the above banner image, try hitting reload on your browser. If that doesn't work, just give it another day or so. Lastly, the mobile presentation of the new site, how it displays on tablets and smartphones, is a little less than ideal at present. We'll be working on tuning that in the future.
In any case, we hope you enjoy the new site and find it much more useful than our old one. Enjoy!

Hasselblad Trade-In Pricing...
On June 1st, 2017, Hasselblad will be implementing some changes to their trade-in/upgrade program. There will be a slight price increase across the board, on average roughly about 10%. In addition, and more importantly for those with older systems, there will no longer be any trade-in allowance at all for H3D and older systems. Only H4D systems and newer will be eligible for a trade-ins as of June 1st.
Hasselblad's trade-in allowances have been very generous for older systems, generally far in excess of what you could get if trying to sell on the used market. So... if you have been contemplating an upgrade, do not delay!
Following is a link to Hasselblad's website that details the changes to the upgrade program. Note that the prices listed are in USD of course. Right now, you'd be looking at roughly 40% more in CDN dollars, once shipping, exchange, brokerage etc. is factored in. So, multiply those prices by 1.4x to estimate Canadian costs.
Hasselblad H6D Trade-In Price Change Details
Also, if you have been thinking of a new Hasselblad, but do not have a system to trade, we actually have two used H3D-39 systems at the moment. You could buy one, trade it in towards a new H6D, and come out way ahead since you will get far more value on the trade than the cost of the used one. In addition, with those used cameras you can pick up an 80mm lens as well, and even a film magazine with one of them, since those items will not need to be sent in for the trade, only the body, prism and digital back, as well as some accessories and caps. See the image at the top of the post to see the two cameras we currently have. Note that the one on the right has the added GPS module attachment as well and if you click on the image, it will open up bigger to more easily read the tags.
As an example of trade-in value, let's say you wanted to get a new H6D-50c. The regular pricing here in Canada for an outright purchase with no trade-in, is $36,395. However, if you were to trade in either of the H3D systems above, the price drops to $25,345, for a trade-in allowance of $11,050. So, you can save $5,250 by buying, then trading the H3d on the left, or save $6,050 for the one on the right! Plus, you get to keep the 80mm lens on either one, whereas a new one would be $4,350! The film magazine new, should you care about having one, is $3,050!
So, you can see that there'd be well over $10,000 in savings, factoring in the lens and accessories, on either of those two used cameras, should you buy and then trade towards a new H6D-50c. But only before June 1st, so don't let this great opportunity slip away; contact us today!

NEW! Fujifilm GFX Medium Format System
Today is the day that Fujifilm has officially announced their ground-breaking new GFX medium format mirrorless camera system. The GFX 50S is a 51.4 megapixel, CMOS-sensor based mirrorless camera with exceptionally high performance specifications and alongside the new body, Fujifilm has also announced three initial lenses, with several more to appear later in 2017. The new system is slated to start shipping by late February and prices are surprisingly modest for medium format gear. At launch, pricing in Canada will be as follows...
GFX 50S Body - $8,499
GF 63mm f/2.8R WR standard lens - $1,899
GF 32-64mm f/4R LM WR wide zoom - $2,999
GF 120mm f/4R LM OIS WR Macro lens - $3,499
You can inquire about pre-ordering by clicking the above banner. In addition, we will be hosting a hands-on GFX Launch Event at Beau Photo Supplies on Friday, February 3rd, so call or email for more information about that too!
Some interesting accessories will be available for the new GFX system as well. One option is a tilting and swiveling EVF bracket ($749), that will allow for greater flexibility when viewing from awkward angles, a vertical battery grip ($799) and a large-format camera adapter plate ($519) to allow for tilt and shift movements when used on a 4x5 camera with suitable, high-resolution large-format lenses. A very interesting accessory will be the H-lens adapter ($879) which will allow for Hasselblad HC lenses to be mounted, even allowing you to use their leaf-shutters for fast studio flash-sync speeds up to 1/800 second. The only downside of the adapter is that those otherwise autofocusing Hasselblad HC lenses will only be manual focus when adapted to the GFX. Still, those two adapters will immediately open up a world of additional lens possibilities when they ship!

Profoto D2 shipment has arrived!
We have just received our first shipment of Profoto D2's. If you remember, Profoto announced the new and improved D1, called the D2. They combined some of the most desirable features of the B1 and packaged it in a monoblock designed for Studio use. I say that because it is AC powered but takes the traditional monoblock to new and exciting heights. It is similar in size, weight and output of the D1, but that is where the similarities end.
First of all the D2 can provide super quick flash duration up to 1/63,000 of a second compared to 1/2600 on the D1. The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. You might just have to buy a new camera to keep up with this amazing strobe! Now with the Profoto Air TTL transmitter, you can access Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8,000 of a second. These new features make it be perfect for dance, food and commercial photographers who want to capture their model in mid-air or splashing water flowing out of a glass etc.
The D2 can be fully integrated with AirTTL flashes like the B1 and B2. You can shoot with all flashes in TTL or manual mode or combine them as you wish. For example set the D2 in manual for the background and use the B1 or B2 in TTL as the main flash. HSS is available in both manual and TTL modes.
Come in and get yours today! Not ready to buy them? We now have them in rentals too.

NEW! Nikon D5, D500 and SB-5000...
Not only has Nikon announced the D5, the successor to the D4S, but like a rabbit out of a hat, they also announced the D500! The D500 is finally (finally!) the long-awaited-and-almost-given-up-on successor to the aging D300S. The D500 was truly a big surprise since in this case, it seems Nikon kept an amazingly tight lid on things. There were no credible leaks that I ever noticed in any case. Nikon has also announced a successor to the SB-910 too, which also seems to kickstart a new flash model number sequence with the brand new Speedlight SB-5000. Its breakthrough feature is moving from optical to radio TTL for Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS). But first, let's start with the new bodies...
The Nikon D5 sports an all-new 20.8MP full-frame CMOS sensor with seriously enhanced high ISO capability. Even the D4S featured ISOs well up into the nosebleed territory but if you buy a D5, you may just need to include an oxygen mask with your purchase. How does a stratospheric maximum ISO of 3,280,000 sound? Yep… count the zeros, that's over 3 million ISO! Even the base ISO goes up to a whopping 102,400 now, so for low-light shooters, the D5 might just be the absolute king of the hill. Now, how useable these crazy high ISOs are, running into the millions... that I am not sure of yet? For sure the JPEG engine has seen some superb enhancements, but how will the raw files fare if run through non-Nikon raw converters like Lightroom or Capture One? Even so, one can be fairly certain that the D5 will be an improvement over the D4S regardless, and the D4S was certainly no slouch when it came to high ISO…

NEW! Fujifilm X-Pro2!
A slew of big announcements from Fujifilm marks this day! A Fujifilm rep was kind enough to lend me a preproduction X-Pro2, an X70 and the new 100-400 zoom a short while ago, just so I could prepare a bit of a hands-on preview in time for the official announcement. Despite the fact that I am very behind with my blogging (nothing on the new Nikon announcements yet for example, but coming soon!) I feel obligated to put the other blog entries on hold and first talk about the Fujifilm gear, since the rep did go totally out of his way to get me the gear for the personal hands-on I had requested. Please note that the camera I tested definitely had beta firmware, and I did notice the occasional typo. I also cannot be sure how the camera's performance will change, or what features might still be added, once the final firmware is out. I will publish some more hands-on impressions of how it is to shoot with, once I get my hands on a production camera for a while.
So, now to the X-Pro2… finally! Many have been waiting for an upgrade to Fujifilm's first interchangeable lens X-system camera, and soon the wait will be over. The X-Pro2 improves on its predecessor in pretty much every way. First off, rest assured that Fujifilm's superb Hybrid-VF is still present, and it has been upgraded to offer an optional zoomed EVF focus preview in its lower right corner, even when in OVF mode, just like its cousin, the X00T.
NEW! XF100-400mm zoom, Fujifilm X-E2s and X70...
Along with the X-Pro2 announcement, Fujifilm has announced a slew of other products, including the highly anticipated XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6R LM OIS WR zoom. Above is a photo of the preproduction X-Pro2 on the new zoom and as you can tell, it isn't exactly a svelte lens! Thankfully, it isn't quite as heavy as it looks, but you sure wouldn't be lugging this around for casual shooting. Carrying this lens will mean you are going to be wielding it with purpose, motor-sports, wildlife, birding etc.
Since the lens was preproduction and I had very little time with it, I am unable to comment on its image quality. That said, I did do a few indoor handheld shots at between 1/10 and 1/15 second, and even wide open at 400mm (a 600mm equivalent), they were mostly tack sharp. The 5-stops of image stabilization that Fujifilm is claiming certainly does not seem exaggerated. It features a weather-resistant design, has fast focusing, a lens hood with a built-in, sliding polarizer adjusting door, a tripod foot and apart from all the usual controls, also has a focus limiter switch. Here is a comparison, hoods off, to the largest of Fujifilm's other tele zooms, with the new big gun on the left, the the XF 40-150mm f/2.8 zoom in the middle, and on the right, the XF 55-200mm…

X-E2 bundles & the Metz 26 AF-1 Flash (finally!)
All of the above for only $1,099 - only 1x left!
Having a hard time finding a fabulous gift for that special someone? How about a huge bundle of Fujifilm goodness! We only have two (2) of these great bundles left that include the following…
- Fujifilm X-E2 Body (black)
- Fujinon XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS Kit Zoom
- Fujinon XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS Tele Zoom
- Fujifilm EF-20 Flash Unit
- Hand Grip for X-E1/X-E2
- Half Leather Case and Leather Strap for X-E1/X-E2 (brown)
- Extra NP-W126 Battery Pack
All these items together normally sell for over $2,000 but each of these two remaining special bundles can be had for only $979! Imagine giving someone this whole, complete kit of Fujifilm gear for Christmas! Or, treat yourself and get into a lightweight, high quality Fujifilm system for under $1,000. This is less than $200 more than just the X-E2 body is selling for now after rebate!
Finally, the Metz flashes have arrived! A great Christmas gift too and in stock at $174.95
After nearly a year-long wait, we have finally received a shipment of the new, pocket-sized Metz 26 AF-1 flash units for Fujifilm X-series cameras! I've briefly tested one out on my X-E2 (the X-E1 in the above photo was just being a "model") and its exposures seem accurate. For its size, it seems quite powerful too, with a guide-number of 26 (meters).
It comes with a black fabric, drawstring pouch for storage and includes a clip-on telephoto extender. There is a flip up wide-angle panel and the flash pivots down for close or macro shots, sits in its standard height (as seen in the photo) for normal shots and then pivots up vertically for an angled ceiling bounce. It has a TTL mode, a Slave mode (not tested yet) and a small LED video light with two brightness settings, sufficient to add a bit of a fill or to create a catch-light in the eyes if shooting a video. It even comes with a USB port, presumably to allow for future firmware upgrades when new cameras are released.
It uses two AAA batteries and with alkaline cells, its recycle time is quite snappy. I will be testing it with some NiMH Eneloops as well to see how much faster its recycling may be. Here are two more views, first a side view showing how slim it is…
… and here it is from the back. A power button, then TTL, SLAVE and LED mode buttons: the ultimate in simplicity!

If you are not familiar with the Lomography series of cameras, here's a fairly comprehensive list of them all and a few samples. If you don't already own a Lomo camera or want to buy another one to try out, we have quite the range in store!
One of their really fun cameras because you actually build it yourself is the Konstructor!
There's also the Lubitel, the Lomokino and the Sprocket Rocket.
One of their really sharp, great cameras that is extra versatile because it does a variety of sizes is the BelAir.
It can do 6x12...
And 6x6....
6x9 size...
As well as regular 35mm in a long format...
Lomography also has their great range of Diana cameras. From the baby (110 film) to the mini (35mm film) to the standard F+ (120mm film.)
We love the Diana F+! Especially with its varieties of colors!
Can you tell we also love animals?
Another one of their cameras that comes in quite the variety of colors is the La Sardina. Which is aptly named, as it's based on a camera made from a sardine can! Takes fun photos too.
If it's that sweet Fisheye look you're into, then they've got those too! There's the Fisheye 1 and 2, plus the Fisheye Baby 110! The baby is pretty cute, but takes some serious photos.
Lomography also has quite the range of sampler and splash cameras. There's the SuperSampler, the Action Sampler, the Oktomat and the POP 9. Which all take multiple images at once, giving you a great idea of motion. There's also the ColorSplash, that comes with colorful gels you can put over the flash to give you a burst of color in your photos!
Here's the ColorSplash.
And lastly, if you want to get the whole picture....there's some very interesting and creative panoramic cameras in the Lomo line up. There's the Spinner 360 that will actually spin around and get a whole view and the Horizon which has a swing lens to get a great 180 degree view.
Here's the Horizon Kompakt.
It takes fantastic panoramics!
If you have any more questions or would like to inquire which cameras we have in stock give us a call or send us an email! We also carry a variety of Lomography film too!
