NEW! Nikon D5, D500 and SB-5000...

Not only has Nikon announced the D5, the successor to the D4S, but like a rabbit out of a hat, they also announced the D500! The D500 is finally (finally!) the long-awaited-and-almost-given-up-on successor to the aging D300S. The D500 was truly a big surprise since in this case, it seems Nikon kept an amazingly tight lid on things. There were no credible leaks that I ever noticed in any case. Nikon has also announced a successor to the SB-910 too, which also seems to kickstart a new flash model number sequence with the brand new Speedlight SB-5000. Its breakthrough feature is moving from optical to radio TTL for Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS). But first, let's start with the new bodies...

Nikon D5 ($8,499)

The Nikon D5 sports an all-new 20.8MP full-frame CMOS sensor with seriously enhanced high ISO capability. Even the D4S featured ISOs well up into the nosebleed territory but if you buy a D5, you may just need to include an oxygen mask with your purchase. How does a stratospheric maximum ISO of 3,280,000 sound? Yep… count the zeros, that's over 3 million ISO! Even the base ISO goes up to a whopping 102,400 now, so for low-light shooters, the D5 might just be the absolute king of the hill. Now, how useable these crazy high ISOs are, running into the millions... that I am not sure of yet? For sure the JPEG engine has seen some superb enhancements, but how will the raw files fare if run through non-Nikon raw converters like Lightroom or Capture One? Even so, one can be fairly certain that the D5 will be an improvement over the D4S regardless, and the D4S was certainly no slouch when it came to high ISO…

FUSION 2015 is just around the corner

Fusion is back for the 5th year and not only are we continuing to grow, we’re also on the move – we’re taking over the new and beautiful Anvil Centre in New Westminster. For the second year we’re teaming up with the Professional Photographers of Canada BC division as part of their weekend “PHOTOGraphie” event. PHOTOGraphie is British Columbia's only professional photography festival. The festival’s purpose is to inspire and share the value of photography through education, gallery exhibitions and salon competition.

 The scope of FUSION 2015 is to not only focus on the latest in DSLR video but also to include many aspects of still photography including lectures, demos and even a round-table discussion.

This year we will have 12 amazing speakers, each presenting 90 minute talks/Demo sessions running throughout the day. There will be a wide range of topics presented; from fine Art Digital Printing, Fashion and Still life Photography, the ins and outs of Destination Wedding Photography as well as Audio for film and Video, and Documentary film making, just to name a few. You are guaranteed to come away having learned something if you attend this year’s show. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE & RECONNECTING TO THE PAST

IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE 1^ST ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHIE FESTIVAL

Fusion is back for the 4^th year and this year we are moving the date to the Fall – Sunday, September 28^th, and partnering with some pretty great people.

This year Fusion 2014 will be a part of PHOTOgraphie - PPOC-BC's professional photography festival. The festival’s purpose is to inspire and share the value of photography through education, gallery exhibitions and salon competition. We are also partnering with Vancouver Photo Workshops who have a great pool of local instructors along with a long list of international photographers that they bring in for Master Classes. With these new partnerships we are able to expand the scope of Fusion 2014 to not only focus on the latest in DSLR video but also include the ever popular still photography.

Fusion 2014 will be held at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver on Sunday, September 28th. This location offers the opportunity to present four 90 minute speaker sessions running concurrently, with four blocks throughout the day for a total of 16 presentations. The trade show will run in the great hall from 8:30am to 4:00pm, and attendees will be able to buy trade show only tickets or individual speaker tickets which will include a free trade show pass.

Fusion 2013 featured booths from:  Nikon, Canon, Profoto, Tiffen, Vancouver Photo Workshops, Panasonic, Red Raven Markerting, Hasselblad, NEC, Van Arts, Amplis and more. Changing from the world of a freelance sports photographer to exploring stories, people and places though the lens of the world’s largest portable camera and recording life using the wet plate process from the 1850's. In conversation with Vancouver Photographer Rick Etkin, Ian will discuss his Silver and Light project, the risks he took, the inspiration he follows, his passion and creative process, what it feels like to follow a dream and see it succeed. The project tells many stories both in print (metal plates) and the videos that offer compelling insight into peoples’ lives, fears and success. Ian will share these aspects of himself and Silver and Light during his talk.
