The 180mm f/4 VSF lens is a compact mid range telephoto lens. It yields a good camera to subject distance, slight flattening of portrait subjects, and exceptional sharpness.


The unique optical design essentially has an "optically correct center," which can produce a sharp image virtually equal to a standard 180mm lens, when an aperture of f/8 or smaller is used. The edges of the lens elements are designed to induce "spherical aberration," which creates a dreamy, soft focus effect when the lens is used at apertures wider than f/8. Unlike common soft focus attachments that simply degrade a sharp image, the RZ 180mm VSF can "build" a soft focus image using its unique combination of spherical aberration and diffusion disks. The result is tremendous creative control for effect from dramatic to subtle.


Three supplementary disks are supplied with the lens, and fit internally in the lens barrel. The three disks are labeled No.1 (5), No.2(5.6) and No.3 (6.3). The numbers in parentheses are the approximate f/stops to which the lens diaphragm, when set to f/4, is modified. The disks, numbered one, two and three, have different diameter holes in the center, surrounded by numerous smaller holes extending toward the edges of the disks. These small holes act like multiple diaphragms, overlaying softer images on top of the sharp image projected through the center hole. The overall level of sharpness is controlled by the diaphragm opening and choice of disk. Also, whether or not a disk is used at all.

Canon's Elura 40MC is one of the smallest, lightest digital video camcorders available. Weighing around 14 ounces, this vertically oriented camcorder fits snugly into the palm of your hand (not resting on your hand like most cameras, this one fits almost inside it).

Because of its compact frame, some of its features had to be trimmed. Its 2-inch LCD is smaller than most, but its bright screen can be viewed easily even in daylight. Unlike many other camcorders, the Elura's viewfinder displays in color, not black and white. It also offers only a 10x optical zoom, not as high as other cameras, but still adequate for most users.

Unlike many camcorders whose still image quality is subpar, the Elura 40MC captures 1024 x 768 pixel still pictures on a Secure Digital media card (an 8 MB SD card is included) rather than on the MiniDV media. And if coupled with a Canon CP-10 card photo printer, you can directly print images from the Elura without going through your PC.

But it's video quality that matters most in a DV camcorder. The Elura 40MC captured excellent video, even in poor lighting conditions. It doesn't have a built-in light, but its low-light mode still managed to record impressive video with realistic colors and limited graininess.

The Elura's autofocus worked quickly and accurately, and its zoom buttons were within easy reach during filming. The basic modes of the camera make it point-and-shoot easy for the novice user. Audio quality with the built-in mic wasn't the best (we noticed some noise during recording), but the Elura comes with a port that lets you connect an external microphone.

Record number of eagles expected at Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival

I also wanted to share a story by Larry Pynn in the Nov 9th Vancouver Sun.  This may prove to be the best year for viewing and photographing eagles at the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival.

"A record number of eagles are expected to be spotted during this year's edition of the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival. More than 2,000 bald eagles have been seen near the Chehalis River at Harrison Mills and organizers hope an even greater number of birds will appear when the festival kicks off next week.

The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society will release an eagle into the wild on November 13 at at Pretty Estates in Harrison Mills. The bird was found with two broken legs by two fishermen and has been rehabilitated by the wildlife group.

The following weekend volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors to birdwatching sites in the area.

Tourism Harrison will host the Harrison Bald Eagle Weekend, which features a photography workshop, on November 24 and 25.

The birds of prey are drawn to the area by spawning salmon swimming up the Fraser River.

A 2011 report stated that the wintering population of bald eagles has increased 4.5-fold on B.C.'s south coast, to the point that during a cold winter the region plays host to the world's largest concentration of eagles, estimated at 56,000."

Fujifilm X-E1 in stock!

The new Fujifilm X-E1 bodies have finally arrived in very limited quantities, both in black and silver. This baby brother to the X-Pro1 is a lighter and smaller alternative that is also much less expensive. It comes in at a whopping $700 less actually! Yep, the X-E1 bodies are only $999. Sadly, we have not yet received any X-E1 kits with the new XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0 OIS zoom. They are slated to arrive a little later this month.

The X-E1 has the exact same superb X-Trans sensor as the X-Pro1 and you are not giving up any performance whatsoever as far as speed of shooting or image quality. So why the savings? Mainly the X-E1 has less rugged construction and it also does not have the X-Pro1's superb Hybrid-Viewfinder. Instead, it has a pure EVF (electronic viewfinder) but one that is substantially upgraded compared to the EVF mode on the X-Pro1. It has a 2.36 million dot OLED viewfinder that is very sharp, has good eye relief, a diopter adjustment dial, a high refresh rate and seems to have excellent colour accuracy and saturation. One other slight downgrade that is likely dictated by its more compact dimensions, is that the rear LCD is now a 2.8" unit, like the X100 and not the larger 3.0" one that the X-Pro1 has.
